PALCO's $25 million state-of-the-art sawmill in Scotia embodies the Company's principle of "working for the future."
The mill's computerized processing ensures the optimum use of each log, reducing waste and producing a superior product at competitive prices.
As each log enters the mill, multiple laser beams take readings every ½ inch to map its shape and wood volume. That information is sent to a computer that factors in current market prices and customer preferences to determine which cuts or dimensions will produce the most amount of usable lumber or the best market return. The computer then positions the log for optimum milling and directs the saws to cut the log into specific types and lengths of finished lumber. Each piece of lumber is then automatically graded and sorted.
The mill can easily process fifteen 40'-55' logs per minute. The new technology is expected to increase efficiency by as much as 50 percent and improve worker safety by using machines rather than people to do the dangerous work of turning and positioning logs during milling.
In addition to making the best use of available resources, the new mill has other environmental benefits, as it will help small forest land owners in the area stay profitable and keep their property as forest land and wildlife habitat. PALCO is building long-term relationships with these landowners, offering them access to our science, helping them gain certification, providing high quality seedlings, and now the final step, offering the best prices for their logs.
By becoming more efficient and competitive, PALCO strengthens its ability to remain a major economic force in Humboldt County for generations to come.
