Installation Instructions

For 2-inch redwood decking, space joists no more than 24 inches on center. If decking is to be applied diagonally, space joists no more than 16 inches on center. Decking joints must fall over joists.

Leave a 1/8-inch space between boards and predrill screw and nail holes at ends of pieces to reduce splitting.

Install decking using fasteners that have at least 1-1/2 inches of penetration into the joists. Use one decking screw or nail per bearing and a staggered pattern. This is sufficient to hold the wood in place.

Make sure that all screws, nails and hardware are non-corrosive. These should be stainless steel, aluminum or top-quality, hot-dipped galvanized (electroplated galvanizing is not acceptable).

Redwood Understructure

Redwood is also an excellent choice for deck joists and beams. PALCO offers 2x8 and 2x12 redwood lumber for use as joists and stringers, and 4x6 and 6x6 redwood timbers for beams and columns.

Finishing redwood decking

Surfaced-dry redwood decking takes and holds finishes better than other woods. A quality finish will enhance the performance of any exterior wood project, so it is best to coat all surfaces with a water repellent wood preservative before installation.

There are several finish options available for outdoor decks:

Water repellents stabilize redwood's color at a buckskin tan if applied and maintained regularly.

Transparent and semitransparent stains designed for decks provide both protection and color.

Bleaching stains speed up the natural weathering process and turn redwood to an immediate, silvery gray.

No matter what type of finish is used, the formulation should include: a mildewcide, an ultraviolet inhibitor and a water repellent. Make sure surfaces are clean and dry. Use a brush for application-don't use spray systems. Don't use varnishes, lacquers or other film-forming finishes. Don't mix incompatible finishes and always follow manufacturer's directions.
