With experience that spans three centuries, we have learned to take a long term view. We are guided by the natural rhythms of the forest that are measured in decades and centuries.

For example, we plant one million seedlings a year, knowing that some of those trees will not be harvested during our lifetime, and we spend $5 million a year on environmental science that protects wildlife habitat for future generations. In addition, we have sold or donated more than 28,000 acres of land to the public for parks and preserves such as the Prairie Creek State Park and Humboldt Redwoods State Park.

We were the first timber company in California with a federally-approved Habitat Conservation Plan that protects wildlife habitat for a wide variety of fish, birds, amphibians, and rare plants. And in recognition of our commitment to sustainable forestry, we have been certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative ®, a nationwide program whose members have planted five billion trees since 1995.

As part of our commitment to our 550 employees, PALCO leases the local grade school in Scotia to the state of California for $1 per year, subsidizes the town daycare center, and provides college scholarships to the children of all our employees. We see this commitment as another investment in the future — theirs and ours.

Our administrative offices, sales office, and value-added lumber division are located in Scotia, California. In addition, we recently opened a $25 million high-tech sawmill and a $5 million planer in Scotia to complement our existing sawmill in Fortuna.

We welcome visitors to tour our community and our Company and learn how modern forest management sustains forests, families, and jobs in Humboldt County.
