Types of Assistance Available
PALCO provides a variety of assistance to landowners seeking to be certified as sustainable forest managers.
For instance, we can provide information gathered by our 31-person science staff to Landowners Assistance Program (LAP) participants who want to become certified and/or are applying for timber harvest permits. Our scientists have information on cumulative effects of road construction on watersheds, stream sediments, soils and geology, and population surveys of marbled murrelets and spotted owls that adjacent landowners need in order to obtain approved harvest permits.
We can also provide information about road construction Best Management Practices, share infrastructure costs if adjacent areas are mutually developed, and provide examples of forest management contracts with professional foresters, consultants and loggers. Foresters in our Sustainable Forestry Group are experts in forestry activities such as silviculture, seedling selection, site preparation, and planting. They can assist landowners with contract specifications, help them identify contractors, and evaluate a contractor's work.
Because PALCO collects seeds and grows large quantities of seedlings, we can provide landowners with seedlings for reforestation at our cost - approximately 30 cents per seedling. Next planting season (Jan-March), approximately 30,000 seedlings are available for the program. More seedlings can be made available with two years advance notice. Finally, we can provide cold storage for local landowners' seedlings until the planting season.
