Watersheds
The rivers, streams and even the seasonal waterways on our property, are essential to plant and animal life that live in our forests. The smallest life forms in and near streams are essential to the redwood forest ecosystem. Our Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) is designed to keep the ecosystem intact and sustainable while we plant, grow, and manage the resources of the forest in a responsible way.
The methods we use to protect streams on our property are the most comprehensive and rigorous management strategies being implemented on large private forestlands.
Our wildlife and fisheries biologists, our geologists, hydrologists, and botanists measure the results of our stream protection measures to ensure that our program is working successfully. They keep an eye on key indicators, including water temperatures, water quality, sediment levels, streambed and pool structures, and the presence of aquatic insects called macroinvertebrates. As we learn more, we will modify our program to make it more effective.
