Juvenile Fish Surveys

Knowing how fish utilize their habitat is essential in assessing how healthy the habitat is. Sampling the fish present in the stream tells us what habitat the fish are using. Electrofishing sampling allows us to survey streams known to contain fish and amphibians. This lets us know the type and abundance of species living on our property.

This type of monitoring consists of performing three passes over designated reaches of streams at pre-established stations. Each specimen that is netted is identified, tallied, and measured so that species distribution can be documented. An age determination is also made at this time as well as assessing the overall health of the fish.

A second method of tracking our fish population is snorkel surveys. These surveys are a direct method of documenting the type and abundance of the fish populations living in our streams. Working in designated reaches of streams at pre-established stations throughout our property, members of our environmental science team use snorkels to conduct underwater surveys of fish populations on our property.
