PALCO has been a leader in the preservation of old growth redwood
forests and unique ecological sites for more than 70 years. In 1928,
A.S. Murphy and John Emmert of PALCO shook
hands with Newton Drury of the Save-the-Redwoods League, sealing
an agreement to protect important groves of old growth redwood
along the Eel River.
Beginning in 1931 with the Founders Grove and Rockefeller Forest,
PALCO has provided over 28,000 acres (approximately twelve
percent of our current land base) for old-growth protection. That land
formed the basis for many of California's most famous parks, including
> Founders Grove
> The Headwaters Reserve
> The Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwood State Park
> Bull Creek Flat
> Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
PALCO continues to work with conservation groups to preserve more
of these beautiful forests, including nearly 1,200 acres in Owl Creek
in 2001, more than 700 acres in Grizzly Creek in 2002, and almost
500 acres near Redway in May 2003.
