Over the last century, PALCO has become a leader in protecting the environment, producing high-quality lumber products, and preserving the truly special places treasured by the public. That leadership role continues today.

For example, our 50-year multi-species Habitat Conservation Plan protects 17 species on our property.

In principle and in practice, we're working every day to preserve the diversity of our landscape, protect threatened and endangered species, maintain water quality, and provide for a sustainable supply of timber.

Our current best management practices significantly exceed State Forest Practice Rules. For example:

  • Water quality and fish habitat is protected with large extended buffers along our streams and substantial efforts to reduce erosion from our roads
  • We are conducting watershed analysis on our entire ownership to ensure that the best available science is used to guide our management
  • More than 6,000 acres of forestland, primarily old-growth redwood, is set aside as habitat for marbled murrelets, the spotted owl, and other species

In fact, nearly half of our 220,000 acres is currently off-limits to harvest, pending further study. The amount of land PALCO has set aside to protect the environment is unprecedented in the state of California or elsewhere in the nation on managed forest lands.
